USER EXPERIENCE & INTERACTION DESIGN
BAND Graphic User Interface
In a changing world, proper physical therapy shouldn't be confined to the walls of a hospital. BAND and its accompanying app take quality physical therapy into the home of the user.
BAND is a handheld physical therapy band with biometric performance data collection capabilities developed by a client of Start Something Bold. The client came to the consultancy to develop multiple user interfaces, both for the physical therapist and the end-user (patient). The determined target audience was mainly the elderly, so the interface needed to be clean, straightforward, and easy to understand. On the physician's side, multiple patients needed to be able to be taken care of, so data protection, HIPPA, and ease of use were also key.
INTERFACE DESIGN PROCESS
This application was developed into two high-level prototypes, one designed for an iPad (physician's application) and the other for a handheld smartphone (patient's application). Key parts of the application included the real-time calibration of each exercise included in a workout, an exercise library, and a progress history, displaying the same information to both the physician and patient and a range of acceptable movement shown to the patient as they are performing an exercise at home in real-time. Initial wireframes were created in Figma and went through multiple rounds of user testing which were facilitated by Start Something Bold. Key insights included consistency in the application's process of making the connection with the conversation that was being had in the physician's office and designing the app to be able to be easily expanded to additional exercise libraries.
